When Dylan went electric (at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and on subsequent tours) his Folk fans didn’t like it at all.

Did he put away his Stratocaster and dismiss his electric backing band when the booing started? No, he told The Band: ‘Whatever you do just keep on playing.’

No one tells Bobby D what to sing! A true artist.

Here are the lyrics:

You’ve got a lot of nerve Mister,
We bought your albums and made you a star.
You threw it back in our faces when you
Picked up your Stratocaster.
All us folkies in the coffee bars
Dug your political repertoire.
We built your reputation
As the prophet of the hippy generation.

Bobby D, Bobby D, picks up his electric guitar.
Bobby D, Bobby D, plugs in his electric guitar.

The booing got louder from the floor,
The band never played a gig like this before.
"Pay no attention to what they’re saying,
"Whatever happens just keep on playing."
You can’t control what he has to say
Don’t try to tell him what music to play.
Dylan’s gotta do what he’s gotta do,
He’s evolving faster than you.

Bobby D, Bobby D, picks up his electric guitar.
Bobby D, Bobby D, plugs in his electric guitar.

How can his fans get him so wrong?
How does the little man stay so strong?
He doesn’t need your affirmation,
He doesn’t need your confirmation.
They call him Judas, they think it’s a sin,
Don’t they know he’s just shedding a skin?
You’re never gonna pin him down,
Just as you arrive he’s leaving town:

Bobby D, Bobby D, picks up his electric guitar.
Bobby D, Bobby D, picks up his electric guitar.
Bobby D, Bobby D, plugs in his electric guitar.
Bobby D, Bobby D, Plugs in his electric guitar.
