KNOCKED UP
Film Review

This is the story of two different worlds colliding; Ben (Seth Rogan) is a fun-loving, unemployed dope-smoking dude and Alison (Katherine Heigl) is an ambitious, well off TV presenter. After a drunken one night stand (and a misunderstanding about who was using protection) Alison discovers to her horror that she has been made pregnant by a guy who she would never normally hang out with let alone raise a child with. Through this conundrum the drama unfolds as Alison and Ben learn to put aside their preconceptions about each other and take responsibility for the outcome of what one carefree night has brought into their lives.

It’s a simple premise (all the best ideas are) but the film explores the emotional issues so well that it's elevated from being just another comedy to a piece of quality drama (with the added bonus of being really funny!) Occasionally it seems that the skills involved in comic acting also equip an actor to be a brilliant dramatic actor - like Jim Carey in The Truman Show or Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. Seth Rogan, for me, can be added to that list. His transformation from the hapless, rather hopeless dropout into the responsible dad figure of the unplanned baby is charming, touching and utterly believable. The psychological observations about marriage, friendship, sisterhood and parent sibling relationships are deeper and more subtle than you’d expect in a romcom like this. There is a reason this film did so well at the box office; Judd Apatow, who wrote and directed it, is a very talented guy who has the skill and talent to create  movies which are funny as well as moving. I give it seven out of ten.
